NOTHING BUT THE FACTS
Question 3:
What happened to your "basketball team"?
Doug's a basketball coach?
It sure looks like he is, right?
In 2012, Doug launched the "Rexdale Raiders" basketball team to widespread media coverage and much fanfare. He even made sure to bring photographers to one of the practices, where Ford could be seen running up and down the court, interacting with happy kids from a TCHC community. Ford paid for the jerseys, and a number of his office staff were volunteering. There were even plans to expand the team as more kids showed up. Doug Ford, who constantly boasts about his community involvement, came through again. Awesome, right? |
So what really happened?
Turns out there was no team. Some 10-year old residents complained that they couldn't access their community gym for pickup. Ford heard about it, bought the kids some jerseys and engineered a photo op.
|
Why does it matter?
Doug Ford is all talk, no action. While brother Rob had many faults, nobody doubted his commitment to youth sports (if anything Rob was over-committed). Doug wanted the glory without the effort.
In the 2014 mayoral race Ford boasted that he received the Rotary Club's "highest honour", which turned out to be a common award that he bought for $1,000. This behaviour also extends to constituency work, where Ford claimed to be taking thousands of calls and visiting hundreds of residents... except he didn't keep any records to prove it. Ford didn't open a constituency office, and didn't accomplish anything of note in his four years in office. But funnily enough, every time he picked up a shovel or directed traffic there always happened to be a photographer handy. |
Doug Ford's record of service pales against the hundreds of thousands of hard-working Ontarians who contribute to their communities in substantive ways.
Doug Ford doesn't do anything for free, and he doesn't put in the hard work. If the Ontario PC Party elects Ford as leader, the Liberals and NDP will have a field day diving into his long history of hypocrisy.
A millionaire who buys a few jerseys for a photo op then abandons the kids is not a leader.
